Welcome to First Grade!

Welcome to Town School's 1st grade website! We are looking forward to an exciting year!
Our reading program is a crucial part of the first grade year.  Children are given opportunities to experience reading independently, in small groups, and with the whole class.  This year, Town will introduce the new elementary reading series by Houghton Mifflin.  This program is structured to fit the needs of our students and contains several components of a successful reading program.

A strong social studies program in first grade focuses on the relationship between our students and their world.  We begin with a study of our family, school and community.  Understanding our own culture helps us to relate to others and appreciate other communities.

We will travel across the globe to look at the 7 continents of our planet.  Our studies will focus on the cultural diversities and peoples of China, Italy, Mexico, Kenya and Australia.  We will celebrate each culture and discover the food, music and traditions associated with each country.
First graders will also study the life and work of five major artists.  These impressionists of history have captured the tone of human relationships within our past.  In addition, we will also learn about several important Americans that have helped to create change in our communities.
