Weekly Journal
Each week, every boy is required to read, at least, 25
pages from a book on our reading list or that has been approved. The
reading journal consists of
I. Events (6-10) detailed events on the week's reading.
II. My Response-An opportunity to choose any of the
35 choices on our list and reflect on your reading.
Useful Websites for class and projects:
1.
Dictionary.com
Don't have a dictionary with you? Go to
dictionary.com and look up words you don't recognize in your reading.
This site is also useful for vocabulary and spelling assignments.
There is no excuse for skipping words you don't know!
2. Thesaurus.com
Improve your writing and build your vocabulary by finding
stronger, more descriptive words with thesaurus.com. Be careful,
however, because context matters when you are searching for synonyms.
In other words, you can't simply choose any match that thesaurus.com
generates for you. Plug the word you select into your writing
to make sure that it makes sense in context.
3. The following sites are ideal for THE OUTSIDERS
IndyMedia (http://www.indymedia.org/en/index.shtml)
is a media center dedicated to grassroots journalism. It's an excellent
source of news articles and biographical information on both famous and
lesser-known rebels and outsiders. Read critically, though, since the
articles on this site have a distinctly leftward slant! You
decide.
allows users to search for information on
presidents as well as all congressmen and women by name, party, state,
position, or year.
The Nobel Foundation (http://nobelprize.org/)
provides biographical information on all previous Nobel Prize winners. You
can search for a specific year, or you can browse lists of the youngest,
oldest, most awarded, and most popular winners.
