Tips for Newspaper Writing

1.  Headline is a title that tells the story in bold:

2.  The byline gives the writer credit for the story.

example:

Fifth Grade Boys Win Dodge Ball Championship! [Headline]

by Will Smith  [BYLINE]

     The Fifth grade boys....

 3.  The lead tells the reader the most important news first.  The first line tries to catch the attention of the reader:

"The Fifth grade boys of Town School made history! They defeated the Panthers 5-0 in the Northern California Private School Championshiips."

4.  A good quote livens up the story:

"The boys pulled it together to really work as a team," said the Coach.

5.   The body of the story answers questions for the reader.

  • Who played well? How many games has the team won this season?

6.  The ending gives the reader something to remember:

  • All 46 of the 5th graders are prepared and ready to take on the incoming 4th graders next year.  We're looking forward to the next big match.
