Mathematics 5, Sections 1 & 3

Overview
Welcome to 5th grade math at The Town School for Boys.  In the fifth grade the boys continue their studies of mathematics by using the Chicago Everyday Math Program.  Classes alternate between full class instruction, small group cooperative learning, activities and independent work.  The boys also use technology to further their understanding of math. The combination of the aforementioned makes for a curriculum that is rigorous and intellectually stimulating.

Expectations
The expectation is that each boy will come to class prepared to learn.  To be prepared a boy must bring the following: 2 sharpened pencils, 1 pen, Math Journal, Study Links and laptop as needed and a positive attitude.

Assessments
Throughout the year, the boys are assessed in a variety of ways that include participation, homework, class work, games, projects, tests and quizzes.  The boys can expect to have homework four nights a week and a test or quiz bi-weekly.
 

After school help is available Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:20-4:15.

EXPLANATION OF CHICAGO MATH:
Everyday Mathematics was developed through the University of Chicago Mathematics Project (UCSMP) in order to enable children in elementary grades to learn more mathematical content and become life-long mathematical thinkers.

The Everyday Mathematics instructional design was crafted to capitalize on student interest and maximize student learning.

• Concrete modeling as a pathway to abstract understanding

Everyday Mathematics is organized into six mathematical concept strands that cover a number of skills and concepts. This provides a rich yet balanced curriculum- attention to numeration and computation without neglecting geometry, data, and algebraic thinking.

Every strand is addressed throughout all grade levels of the program. Each grade level builds on extends concept understanding so that children approach each new challenge from a firmly established foundation.

Within the content of Everyday Mathematics, emphasis is placed on

• Using and comparing equivalent expressions
• Expressing numbers in context by including units
• Learning about the reversibility of most things
