Mathematics 5, Sections 2 & 4 Home
Overview
In fifth grade math, students continue to use The University
of Chicago School Mathematics Project, Everyday Mathematics.
Throughout the year, students will be working within the following content
areas: Number Theory; Estimation and Computation (whole numbers / decimals);
Geometry (using a protractor and compass); Decimals
and Percents; Using Data; Fractions (adding/subtracting); Exponents and
Negative Numbers. The mathematics program emphasizes critical thinking,
problem solving within “real world” situations, and practice
of basic skills.
Expectations
Students are expected to come to class prepared to learn.
Students need to have all necessary supplies, including pencils, math
journals, notebooks, calculators, and geometry templates. Homework is
given daily (Fridays generally excepted) and is graded the following
day in class. Failure to return homework on time will result in a deduction
of points. Finally, and most importantly, students are expected to participate
positively in class. This includes following directions, working cooperatively
with others, asking questions, and putting their best effort into all
activities and assignments.
Evaluations
Students are evaluated daily in various situations. Participation,
homework, class work, games, projects, tests and quizzes are all taken
into consideration while assessing student progress.
