Mathematics 6, Sections 1 & 3 Home
Overview
In sixth grade math, students continue to use The University
of Chicago School Mathematics Project, Everyday Mathematics.
Throughout the year, students will be working within the following content
areas: Collection, Display, and Interpretation of Data; Operations with
Whole Numbers and Decimals; Variables, Formulas and Graphs; Rational Numbers;
Geometry (congruence, constructions, and parallel lines); Number Systems
and Algebra Concepts; Probability and Discrete Mathematics; Rates and
Ratios. The mathematics program emphasizes critical thinking, problem
solving within “real world” situations, and practice of basic
skills.
Expectations
In the accelerated 6th grade math program, students are
required to keep up in a fast paced and challenging environment. Students
will be most successful if they are prepared for class, take notes, work
cooperatively with table partners and become involved during instruction.
I expect that accelerated math students not only master the material but also are able to communicate about connections. Homework is given daily (Fridays generally excepted) and is graded
the following day in class. Failure to return homework on time will result
in a deduction of points. Tests are given with the completion
of each unit. Units last anywhere from two to four weeks. Tests will always be announced one week beforehand. Quizzes are given about once a week and are much shorter than tests. Students that are completing homework and participating in class should have no problem on these short quizzes.
Evaluations
Students are evaluated daily in various situations. Participation,
homework, class work, games, projects, tests and quizzes are all taken
into consideration while assessing student progress.
