Projects

Quarter 1: T-Shirt Company CEO Portfolio

During the first quarter students begin working with whole number and decimal computations as they almost simultaneously rediscover statistics. In order to draw a real life component students are asked to create a T-shirt company and work through some financial situations in the process. Students compute statistics questions and are asked to create a Power Point presentation, using spreadsheets as well, highlighting their findings and placing the answers in a more real life context. Problem solving begins to feel more natural as students realize that it is the essence. Examples of these projects can be found here:

Quarter 2: Be Thankful-Be Aware-Poverty Uncovered

At this point of the year it is easy to get caught up in the joys of the holiday season and to forget those around us that have much less than we do. We will be spending two days investigating poverty in San Francisco, America and beyond. In this investigation you will discover how hard it is for some families and individuals to make it into a comfortable class and live healthy and safe lives. The boys will examine resources and compute numbers that will help them identify the people who might be recipients of food, toy, clothing and other drives that we so often conduct during this time of the year. I wish you all a fun and joyous holiday season. Be thankful for the many wonderful things you have.
