We believe that the challenges of today's world require
more than computational or symbolic manipulating prowess. Our mathematics
program has the expectation that the student will gain the ability
to set up problems with appropriate operations; acquire the knowledge
of a variety of techniques to approach and work on problems; have
the ability to work with others to solve problems; be able to see
the applicability of mathematical ideas to common and complex problems;
and develop belief in the utility and value of mathematics.
It is our goal that all students will learn and become
empowered with significant mathematics. To that end, we believe
that differentiation should occur within the realms of instructional
strategies and assessments and not in the realm of content and topics.
Within our content standards, we stress numbers and operations,
algebra, geometry, measurement, and data analysis and probability.
The process standards which highlight ways of acquiring and using
content knowledge include problem solving, reasoning and proof,
communication, connections, and representation.
Standard procedures for UPPER SCHOOL Math classes
- Students must come to class with a sharpened
pencil and necessary texts and materials.
- Homework must be done in pencil.
- Late assignments will lose points.
- Test retakes (for students who would
like the opportunity to improve a grade on a test Retakes must
be taken within a week of the original test date.
The retest is done after school.
Students must attend 40 minutes of extra help before taking a
test for a second time.
5th graders may retake any test once. The two grades will be averaged.
6th graders may retake one test per quarter. The two grades will
be averaged.
7th graders may retake one test per semester. The two grades will
be averaged.
8th graders will not be given test retakes.
