PLATE TECTONICS THEORY (Mid October through end of 1st Semester)
Plate Tectonic Inquiry Project 2009:

With the use of our Plate Tectonic Learning Style Tic-Tac-Toe Rubric we will interpret the question, "Is Plate Tectonics a good theory?"

Let's get it started with explaining these four main features by having the students participate in Town School's Got "Plate Tectonic" Talent!

Earthquake Unit and Simulation (November)
  • Living in an "Earthquake-prone" area? Ever wondered how buildings are built to protect Bay area residents from experiencing natural disasters? How are our modern-day bridges, roads, and houses being built to withstand and endure the seismic activity of the San Andreas and Hayward faults?
  • We'll begin our unit working with our Earthquake PowerPoint: Click here.
  • We will  move into Earthquake Simulations using the Discovery Channel Earthquake Simulator .
  • Practice building Free-
  • We will test how our own Bay Bridge Construction Project is being revamped and renewed to keep us safe. Help us build a safe bridge to with earthquake activity by using the New Bay Bridge: Bridge to Classroom Simulation Program.
  • We take all of our Earthquake knowledge and demonstrate your understanding by designing an Earthquake-proof building or bridge using the Shake Em' Down Earthquake Mini Project 2009!

Its now come to that time of year where every 7th grader Town students says to himself, "When are we going to test the explosivity of volcanic eruptions????"  Well wait no longer!!

The 7th grade will begin to embark on its annual mission to discover, describe, and capture the essence of these magnificent volcanoes through building, research, and actual creation of famous volcanoes and its subsequent eruptions. Blastoff will commence tentatively near the end of January 2009!!!! All are welcome!!!

CONFLICT DIAMONDS, FACT OR FICTION????

Objectives:

1. Assess their prior knowledge about conflict diamonds and evaluate the accuracy of prior knowledge based on new learning.

2. Analyze how diamonds are portrayed in American culture by brainstorming diamond images and references in movies, songs, magazines, advertisements, music videos and popular ideology.

3. Review the political and social implications of conflict diamonds by comparing the impact of natural resources in two countries, Botswana and Cote D'Ivoire.

4. Research the roles of several key players in the diamond industry, and debate and evaluate possible policy solutions from each of their perspectives.

5. Examine and evaluate the effectiveness of the Kimberley Process.
