Sept. 3 Physics Scavenger Hunt Switch Day Assignments due 1st day of school!!!!
Sept. 4 Brainstorm 4-5 meanings of the words, "community" and "leadership" on your Contract Worksheet. Come up with at least 3 "community" norms that are needed to create a successful scientific learning environment.
Sept. 8 Read the "InquiziKid" article and show your parents the Solar Ovens idead you've designed.

Sept. 29 Go to the Zingy Learning Site at www.zingylearning.com and enter your username and password.
  • Go to Zingy Science 8 Folder and down to Lesson 6 Motion.
  • Do Topics #4, 5, and 7.

*If you were here in class today, take notes on slides 1-6 on the Motion PowerPoint.

Sept. 30 Go to the Explore Learning site at www.explorelearning.com.
  • Put in the username: headbanga and the password: chadwick
  • Once online, you can go to "Browse Gizmos". Once here, go to "Browse Science Gizmos" and under Grade 3-5 (yes, Grade 3-5!) click on the Physical Science tab then push "Go".
  • Scroll down once, and under Physical Science, you will see the tab for "Motion and Force". Click this and at the top of the list, you will see the Gizmo for "Measuring Motion".
  • Click on "Launch Gizmo" to open the simulation.
  • Use the Measuring Motion Worksheet to guide you on how to use the Simulation and answer the questions that go along with it.
  • This assignment is over 3 days. So 30 minutes on Wednesday evening, 30 minutes on Thursday evening, and we will finish it in class on Friday.

Oct. 9 Work on Zingy Learning Lesson 6 Topic 10(Velocity). Go through the topic taking down notes. Then do Multiple Choice Quiz 6.10.

Use the 1st Quarter Review Sheet begin to create your Ticket to the Quiz for our upcoming 1st Quarter Quiz on Friday, Oct. 16th.

Oct. 13 Review Acceleration for this week's quiz, by working on some problems from the Acceleration Worksheet.  We will use the Jeopardy System on Wednesday to prepare for Friday's quiz.

  • Click and watch Bill Nye: Buoyancy Parts I , II, and III .
  • Then click on the "Plastiki" website at www.theplastiki.com and test out the plastic bottle-made boat to see how its buoyancy works in the water. Write down your 3 favorite features of the boat and why?

Oct. 30 Bring in two 2-Liter Plastic Bottles to begin our "Bottle Rocket....Blast Off Mini Project" on Monday.
Nov. 2-3 Nov. 2-3: Work on the "Bottle Rocket....Blast Off Mini Project".

Nov. 3-4: We will blast off rockets in the beautiful confines of Alta Plaza Park and utilize the angle of the highest point of flight and determine the "true" height of your rocket! We'll also utilize a 2nd launch as we use a "raw" egg as our passenger send them to and from space!

Nov. 4--13 Look over and decide on the Group and Individual Projects for the Newton Law Project 2009. Email your choices for you and your group to Mr. Singleton and Ms. Chu before the 11th.
Nov. 16-20
  • Get materials needed to begin working on your Newton Vehicles and begin the designs of your vehicle.
  • Work on the Individual Project Choice and Group Project Choice Outlines (1 page each) which are due on Monday, Nov. 23rd. Refer to the Newton Rubric Timeline below for any questions.

Nov. 25-29 Thanksgiving Break
Nov. 30-Dec 4 Continue working on your Individual and Group Project Rough Drafts which will be due on Monday, Dec. 7th. Use the Newton Law Project 2009 Project Sheet if you have any questions.

In preparation for the next week's Review Week (Dec. 7-14):

  • You can begin creating your Ticket to the Midterm using the 2009 Physics Review Sheet. Remember to create this tool in the learning style that works best for your studying technique. This will allow us to maximize the amount of time used for reviewing material in class.

We will take these designs out to Alta Plaza Park on Monday and test the wind direction, how best to catch the maximum wind power, and use it to generate some form of work.
Mar. 15 Work on your Kite Design Reflection Sheet to reflect on the design process used in your Kite Making and the harnessing of the wind's energy.
Mar. 16 Read the Wind Article, "Wind Power-Clean and Reliable" and answer the Wind Energy Article Discussion Questions. for that article. Hold onto this as you will need this for the 2nd article you will read on Friday.

For those individuals who were not in class this week (or were but didn't get as far), work on The Biofuels Student Worksheet.  You only need to complete the Pre-view and the View Questions.  These are the first 12 questions of the document. Stop when you get to the Post View Activities.  We will continue the worksheet when we come back from break.

Attn Students: Tomorrow, we will have a guest teacher who will work with you on a Carbon Footprint Quiz and biotic/abiotic relationship with the Carbon cycle. During the 2nd half of the double period, Ms. Chu and I will then compare and contrast this footprint with your Ecological Footprint. This will allow us to probe our overarching question, "How is Earth a dynamic and fragile planet?"
