The focus of this department is to help all students
become scientifically literate. This involves the ability to design
and carry out experiments and investigations as well as recall and
verbal expression. A scientifically literate person knows that science
is a particular way of learning about, looking at, and knowing the
world. We believe that all students benefit from the honing of the
intellectual skills learned through active hands-on participation
in scientific endeavors. Skills learned in science education are
applicable to a wide range of topics and issues that students are
confronted by throughout their lives.
Upon completion of eighth grade, the student will
have had experience in asking questions about how the world works;
collecting and analyzing relevant data; formulating hypotheses from
the studies of others, both past and present; testing hypotheses
through prediction and experiments; communicating the results of
investigations to peers; and examining the implications of scientific
discoveries on social and economic systems.
