Welcome to the Art Department!
Town students from first through eighth grade visit the
art studio weekly for instruction in art by class section. Art is a required
course through the sixth grade. In the seventh and eighth grade, art becomes
an elective.
Our art studio is a very active place and we have a wonderful,
spacious room. Approximately 300 students participate in our program.
The art period is extended, allowing time for slide shows, discussions,
demonstrations, as well as time for students to immerse themselves in
their artwork.
The art studio is a very "hands-on" place. Students
explore many different techniques and art mediums. It is structured in
that we require all students to participate and build skills in art production,
art appreciation, and aesthetic awareness. In addition, we strive to create
a safe, cooperative environment in which boys feel free to express themselves
and create original artwork.
Our program changes in that we have a different theme each
year. This year, our theme is "Art and History". Students
at each grade level do a few projects that are designed to coincide with
our theme. The theme helps to build a sense of community
in both the art program and in the school, and is featured at our annual
Festival of the Arts held in May.
Recent themes have been "Art Inspired by..." Nature, Word, Different
Cultures, Animals, Food, Sports, Great Art of the
20th Century, and Music.
We work with classroom teachers at various grade levels to
integrate our program with what boys are studying in their classes. By
coordinating our program with the curriculum, students approach their work
with greater enthusiasm and ideas, and learning is reinforced. Our goal is
to enable students to connect what they learn in art with their life
outside the classroom, and develop a lifelong love and appreciation for
art. Please also visit our
gallery for a sampling of wonderful
student artwork!
There are many ways that parents can participate in the
program. Click here for a parent volunteer form.
