Grade 3
Third grade drama is a semester long course that meets once a week, for fifty minutes. The curriculum includes the following: basic creative drama techniques; basic improvisation using teacher/student ideas; pantomimes; poetry; clowning; movement; improving story; dramatic structure, the play, and written material. A performance is planned for other students at the end of the semester.

"A Pizza The Size of the Sun"

Grade 4
Fourth grade drama continues from the third grade experience with more focus on a short play recital at the end of the semester. Theatre games are included during the class and are more sophisticated in nature than those at the third grade level. Students are encouraged to “find out” about their character’s traits and personality, and what makes the character behave as he does. Stage blocking is introduced and students become comfortable with stage directions and movement. Voice and diction control is introduced with particular attention to audibility and pace of voice. Learning lines and cue lines, and the importance of this to the production, is stressed. The ensemble of theatre, working with the other cast members to achieve the best response, is part of the program. The teacher works with each child’s particular interests and talents and helps to develop these to the fullest. The play is presented at the end of the semester to other students and invited guests.

"Squids Will Be Squids"

Grade 5 & 6

This is a course of creative drama and improvisation, using primarily the students’ creative ideas. As the semester progresses, a subject for a class project is selected; the teacher breaks the material down into sections which the students then improvise in class. A play scripted on the class project is introduced and each student performs one or more parts. With the introduction of scripted material, the class focuses on basic stage techniques, including the ensemble aspects of the play, voice and diction, stage movement, and analysis of the play’s characters and actions.
