The Arts program includes the traditional
fine arts as well as the technical arts. These are classes where
active learning is encouraged and aesthetic knowledge is stressed.
The visual arts afford opportunities for the student to make sense
of and to use visual symbols that may offer a new way of constructing
cognitive knowledge. Musical arts introduce the student to another
symbol system that is an alternative language in which to communicate.
Dramatic arts can strengthen mind and body coordination. Technical
arts afford the student an alternate way to communicate emotion
and information using modern technology.
Courses in The Arts Department include art, music, drama, computer
graphics, digital photography, and woodworking. Each of these subject
areas requires the student to reflect on experiences or works and
to evaluate them drawing on history and criticism, as well as creation
and appreciation. The Arts Department works on developing conceptual
analysis skills, as well as the formulation of critical thinking
skills, such as interpretation, critical reasoning, and evaluation
through reflection. We also hope to give the student opportunities
for emotional exploration and expression through the arts and thus
to expand emotional, physical, and cognitive abilities.

All boys take music and art through sixth
grade. Electives are designed to give the boys some exposure to classes
that are not considered mainstream academic courses. In addition, students
may choose from a selection of pre-designated classes. Our goal is to
broaden the curriculum content and to give the students the opportunity
to have a hand in their course load each semester.
Grade 3-5 Selectives
Selectives are electives offered to grades 3 to 5
in which all students rotate through all the electives. Selectives include:
| Digital Photography |
In Digital Photography, students are taught through
project-based learning, the classic art of photography as well as
the software and digital principles that allow for the further manipulation
and creation of images on the computer. The class is held in the
PC Lab, though we do move around the school quite a bit to shoot
"on location". The students learn to cover assemblies
and school events, and sometimes contribute their photos for use
in the yearbook, web site, and other school publications. |
4-5 |
 |
| Drama |
This is a course of creative drama and improvisation,
using students' creative ideas. The class focuses on basic stage
techniques, including the ensemble aspects of the play, voice and
diction, stage movement, and analysis of the play's characters and
actions. The course culminates in a performance for the students'
classmates. |
3-5 |
 |
| Lego Engineering |
This is a class to develop and enhance students’
problem solving and critical thinking skills; reinforce principles
and methods of mathematics through application in engineering; and
provide an opportunity to enjoy working with a building system.
Projects are grouped into subject areas including Mechanical Engineering,
Structural Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Construction Technology,
Architecture, and Robotics. |
4-5 |
 |
| Music: Bells |
For students interested in continuing to learn
to play different instruments, handbells is a venue that emphasizes
teamwork and musicianship together. While learning how to perform
as an ensemble, the students become featured performers at assemblies
and concerts. |
5 |
 |
| Music: Recorder |
Learning to play the recorder is fun and a good
introduction to ensemble playing. This course will enable boys to
cover a wide repertoire including duets and songs in different
modalities. It will enable boys to learn about phrasing, rhythm
reading, and proper technique. |

 |
| Woodworking |
Working in the medium of wood can be very exciting
and can give students a way to express creativity without using
the conventional tools of the art room. Here, students have the
opportunity to develop a complete masterpiece from the conception to the
final completed project. Students learn to work in an organized
manner and to take one step at a time as well as discovering the
importance of planning and pride in working a project through to
completion. |

grade Desktop Publishing elective. The class will discuss higher
level design ideas, and use a multitude of applications to develop
creative, original projects. Advanced Photoshop skills are introduced
during quarter one, and honed over the remainder of the year. Additional
design skills are taught through web authoring software such as
Macromedia Dreamweaver and animation programs such as Macromedia
Flash. The project-based nature of this class allows the students
to apply acquired skills to projects that are selected with student
input. |
