Public Speaking

For one semester during either the seventh or eighth grade, each boy will take a course in Public Speaking. The purpose of the course is to teach the basic principles of speaking to groups with confidence. Students will learn to select appropriate topics, research and write speeches, and present 4 different kinds of speeches during the class.

Sept. 7 Introduction to class. Articulation exercise. Discussion of dramatic interpretations. Assign dramatic interpretation selections.
Sept. 14 8th grade presents their dramatic interpretations. Neat school clothes.
Sept. 21 7th grade presents their dramatic interpretations. Neat school clothes.
8th grade in Yosemite.
Sept. 28 Discussion of speeches to persuade and inform. Work day to choose topics, research speeches. Sign up for topics by Friday, September 30.
Oct. 5 Meet in the Little Theatre. Presentation of speeches to inform or persuade
and practice with microphone. Neat school clothes.
Oct. 12 Meet in the Little Theatre for more persuade/inform presentations. Neat school clothes.
Oct. 19 Discussion of introductory speeches. Work day to choose subject of speech and begin research. Sign up for topics by Friday, October 21.
Oct. 26 Meet in the Little Theatre. 8th grade presents introductions. Jacket and tie.
Nov. 2 Meet in the Little Theatre. 7th grade presents introductions. Jacket and tie.
Nov. 9 Discussion of speeches using computers, props or audio-visual. Sign up for topics by Friday, November 11.
Nov. 16 Presentation of speeches using computers, props, or audio-visual.
Nov. 23 No class, Thanksgiving.
Dec. 7 Presentation of speeches using computers, props or audio-visual.
