Welcome to the Lower School! Pam Abendroth photo by Jennifer Abbe

The lower school includes kindergarten through fourth grade. There are two classes at each grade level with a team of two teachers, a head teacher and a teaching intern from the New Teacher Institute, in each classroom.

Our program is designed around best practices for boys. Our goal is that Town boys will love to learn and have fun at the same time. We want our boys to enjoy the process of learning and delight in the friendships that will be theirs for a lifetime.

In kindergarten the boys' play is their work. Each day has a built-in free choice time so that boys can begin to learn how to make decisions, work cooperatively, and resolve conflicts. Intriguing units about dinosaurs, insects, and bears are designed to capture the imaginations of the kindergarten boys. This is the year that each boy is given a fourth grade buddy who acts as a special friend and helper. This Buddy Program is the basis for a whole Town Family Program that fosters a sense of community throughout the school.

As the boys move on through lower school, teachers strive to promote academic excellence and creative thinking while recognizing individual strengths and styles of learning. Small group activities are used whenever possible. Boys often participate in hands-on projects.
For example, science classes focus on project-oriented lessons. In first grade students place objects in water to determine which ones sink or float. In fourth grade they build complete circuits with switches. The boys are learning by doing.

We invite you to visit the individual grade level sites so that we can share lower school with you. Find out more about our curriculum, faculty, sports philosophy, and why we love to learn here!
