Town School is a vibrant, supportive community
dedicated to enriching the lives of all students, families, and
staff. We therefore value and actively promote a diverse and inclusive
school community. Town School is not only dedicated to educational
excellence, but equally committed to the personal development of
each child. The values of integrity, respect and consideration for
others, and compassion, are as important as academic achievement.
One of our core teaching values is the acknowledgment of, and respect
for, differences in our community and the world at large. We constantly
strive to create curriculum that reflects the diversity of our cultural
history and place in the world.
Town School’s philosophical commitment to a diverse and inclusive
school community is found both in its Mission
Statement and in its Statement
of Core Values. The School’s practical commitment to diversity
and inclusiveness is found every day, in the many ongoing efforts
of the administration, faculty, board of trustees, and parent body.
Whether it be parent outreach to preschools under the auspices of
our parent-board Diversity Task Force and the board Diversity Committee,
researching aspects of diversity through the faculty Diversity Focus
Group, developing multicultural curricula for classroom teachers
through the Director of Curriculum, exploring new avenues for recruiting
teachers of color, participating in People of Color in Independent
Schools (POCIS)
activities, or providing resources for families of color, diversity
and inclusiveness are always “on the table.”
Working together our community has made remarkable progress on our
diversity goals. Those goals include:
- increasing enrollment of students of color
- increasing the socioeconomic diversity of
the student population
- increasing faculty, staff and trustee diversity
- improving the multicultural components of
the school curriculum
- insuring an inclusive and supportive environment
- increasing involvement of the school in the
greater community
I invite you to read more about these goals and
our efforts in our brochure, Building a Diverse Community at Town
School (click on the image below). For a printed copy of our brochure,
please contact Lynn McKannay (mckannay@townschool.com),
Director of Admissions.

As the Director of Diversity, I work
closely with the Admissions Office, faculty, parents, and students
to weave diversity into the fabric of our community. I welcome your
calls or e-mails regarding our diversity efforts. We are proud of
all we have accomplished to date, while recognizing that building
a diverse and inclusive school community requires ongoing thought,
planning, and hard work.
