Tuition Assistance

Tuition Assistance

In recognition of the value of socioeconomic diversity within our school community, Town School for Boys is committed to providing tuition assistance to families who demonstrate financial need. The school’s goal is to provide assistance to families who qualify and to continue to meet families’ needs throughout their years at Town School. Decisions about admission and tuition assistance are considered independently and confidentially. If you would like a tuition assistance form mailed to you, please indicate on the application for admission.

To qualify for tuition assistance, families need to complete the Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS) form and send it to the School and Student Service for Financial Aid (SSS), an independent national agency that evaluates a family’s ability to afford independent education. Please note that the Town School for Boys code is 7708. Families also need to send a copy of their 2009 IRS Form 1040 and copies of their 2009 W2 forms to SSS.

Each family will receive a report from SSS that shows what the family can contribute for all students in tuition charging schools. Please note that Town School will reduce that number by applying a cost of living adjustment for San Francisco. The school’s Tuition Assistance Committee, comprised of the Headmaster, the Director of Finance and Operations, and the Director of Admission and Tuition Assistance, will review the SSS evaluation and each family’s application to determine if and at what level tuition assistance is appropriate.

Deadlines for 2010-2011 school year

  • January 31, 2010 The PFS form must be submitted to SSS.
  • February 28, 2010 The 2009 IRS Form 1040 and accompanying Schedules, and W2 Forms must be submitted to SSS.
The address for SSS is
P. O. Box 449
Randolph, MA 02368-0449

Awards will be made in March so it is important to adhere to these deadlines. If you are applying to other Bay Area independent schools you need only complete one PFS form. The PFS allows you to have reports sent to multiple schools.

Applying for tuition assistance is a yearly process. Each family must requalify annually and awards may fluctuate to reflect changing financial circumstances. Town School will maintain a continued commitment to providing assistance to families with demonstrated need.
