Our
interscholastic athletic program with cross
country, soccer, basketball,
lacrosse, and baseball
begin in grade 6 with cross country and lacrosse beginning in grade 5. Our program
is available to all boys regardless of ability level. Town School’s
athletic philosophy embraces the multi sport concept, boys are encouraged
to begin sports that are new to them as well as to continue those
they have played before. Athletic participation is an effective
way to teach students about good character, discipline, teamwork,
and the benefits of a healthy, fit body. Participation is also a
wonderful way for boys to represent their school and have fun. Our
philosophy, procedures, and code of ethics have been developed over
time in a manner we believe represent the best practices for boys.
We ask all families to familiarize themselves with the philosophy and procedures of the athletic program. All participants are required to sign and return the Athletic Particpation Contract to the Athletic Department.

Athletic
Leagues
Town School participates in multiple athletic leagues to ensure
that each team participates at commensurate levels with their development.
We participate in the Bay Area Interscholastic League
(BAIAL) for cross country, baseball, some soccer and basketball. We participate in the Catholic Youth Organization League (CYO) for some of our soccer and basketball teams.
Our lacrosse program participates in the Northern California Junior
Lacrosse Association (NCJLA). All athletic leagues offer a “regular”
season followed by some form of playoff.

Philosophy
The goal of our interscholastic athletic program is to provide an
atmosphere that encourages all boys to participate, develop as athletes,
develop as sportsman and persevere regardless of ability level.
We believe feedback is imperative for the development of every participant
to achieve their greatest potential. Coaches will provide continual
feedback. Boys are encouraged to have conversations with parents
about coach comments that include positive contributions, needed
improvement and methods for improvement. School spirit at Town is
a direct result of the camaraderie, sportsmanship and enthusiasm
that develops on both the practice and playing fields.

Procedures
Teams
Boys participate at levels that are commensurate with their development.
Teams are generally formed by grade level – we believe the bond and sense of camaraderie between classmates
is important at the middle school level. Our soccer and basketball programs
are enrolled in multiple athletic leagues; boys are assigned to teams
of similar ability levels keeping in mind overall team size and
competition levels of different leagues. Our baseball program is structured as a varsity, junior varsity and developmental junior varsity program due to the relationship between specific skills and field position.
Playing Time
Boys must arrive to school no later than 12:00 noon in order to
attend any scheduled practices or games.
Many Town boys participate on teams outside of school.
In order to support our students to achieve athletic excellence,
we work to balance the amount of time boys spend participating on
multiple teams. Boys playing on outside teams are asked to attend
all games either for Town School or their other team. We also ask
boys to balance practice times to ensure strong commitments to both
teams. Students who find themselves in this position should meet
with the athletic director to work out an appropriate schedule.
At the 6th and 7th grade levels, every attempt is
made by coaches to balance the amount of playing time during the
regular season while considering attendance, attitude and effort.
We try to provide a balance of playing time per game for our sixth
grade program. The balance of playing time for our 7th grade program
is determined more by the season length than per game. During playoff
games, playing time is differentiated more by ability while still
considering attendance, attitude and effort. We firmly believe the
majority of learning and improving occur during practice, where
games are avenues for testing athletic skill and knowledge directly
against those of similar age and development from other schools
and programs.
We consider our 8th grade to be our “varsity”
level. Playing time for these teams is differentiated by skill,
attitude, attendance and effort throughout the season. Every effort
is made to give playing time to all boys, there may be games when
a boy may not play. We believe this philosophy represents an appropriate
transition as the boys move on to high school program.
Player Positions
Coaches of "A" teams will assign player positions. These positions will be assigned to benefit both the individual and team. Coaches of "B" and "C" teams may enable students athletics to make suggetions for individual positions. These positions too will be assigned to benefit the individual team.
Parent Support
The athletic program at Town School would not be possible without
the direct support from parents. Room Parents along with the Athletic
Department work together to get volunteers to act as Team Parents.
Team Parents are responsible for coordinating parent drivers to
all away games. Parents will transport only the number of boys for
whom they have seatbelts. Boys will be transported to the game and
returned to school, unless parents arrange to take them home from
the game. We ask parents who are driving their sons home to approach
the coach directly at the end of the game. Parent spectating influences the athletic experience for the boys. We believe that the partnership between players, parents and school is crucial for positive outcomes. Please review our Code of Ethics and our Protocol for Spectator Offenses prior to the start of each season.
Communication
The Athletic and Technology Departments work diligently to update
all scheduling changes as soon as we receive notification. We ask
Team Parents to communicate all last minute scheduling changes to
parents, though we recommend all parents check our website or Sports-line
prior to leaving for a game – changes usually include either
game time or location or cancellation due to inclement weather.
Calendar items with blue stars represent changes that have occurred
within the last week. Items with red stars represent new items added
to the schedule. Please review our Communication protocol prior to the start of each season
