Counseling

In recognition of the importance of emotional well-being to the process of learning, Town School employs a full-time counselor who is a licensed educational psychologist as well as a part-time child psychiatrist to provide support to teachers, parents and individual boys on an as-needed basis. Town School is always receptive to working in collaboration with specialists from the community to further a boy's growth and well-being.

The Lower School classroom teachers utilize the Responsive Classroom as a tool for developing classroom and school-wide cultures that honor cooperation, assertion, responsibility, empathy, and self-control as the context for the development of independent, competent learners. Town School students in grades three through eight meet in Discussion Groups weekly. Each group consists of one or two faculty members and approximately 12 boys of the same grade level. We believe it is our responsibility to help students develop self-knowledge, become aware of their feelings, develop communications skills, and accept responsibility for their own behavior.

The school counselor also assists with the process of applying to secondary schools with the students. She provides extensive direction as she helps both parents and boys organize for the process. Matching a boy with a school that is well suited for him is the most important part of the secondary school process.
