New Teacher Institute

In 1990, Town School launched the New Teacher Institute, a two-year training program that combines both theoretical and practical aspects of classroom teaching.

Each year there are 15 interns on a two-year rotation. In the lower school (kindergarten through fourth grade), there is an intern and a head teacher in each self-contained classroom. The upper school is compartmentalized, with interns working in humanities and science. The art intern works in grades 1-8. New Teacher Institute interns are chosen from a large and competitive pool of applicants from around the country.

During the program the interns gain experience over two different grade levels, with two different head teachers. With this constant opportunity for immediate feedback between the intern and head teacher, the returns are enormous for the boys, the interns and the head teachers, all of whom benefit from the mutually rich relationships fostered at Town. During the 2012-13 school year, the New Teacher Institute celebrates its twenty-third year at Town School; 147 men and women have completed 2 years of teacher training through our program. Many have gone on to hold a number of teaching and administrative jobs in the field of education.

Since the 2008-09 school year, interns have secured jobs at the following schools: The American School in Florence, Italy; Benjamin Frankin Intermediate School, Daly City Unified School District, Daly City, CA; The Harker School in San Jose, CA; Hillbrook School in Los Gatos, CA; Marin Country Day School in Corte Madera, CA; Marin Primary School in Larkspur, CA; Mount Tamalpais School in Mill Valley, CA; Ring Mountain Day School in Mill Valley, CA; St. Paul's Episcopal School in Oakland, CA; San Francisco Day School in San Francisco, CA; The San Francisco School in San Francisco, CA; Town School for Boys in San Francisco, CA; and The Urban School in San Francisco, CA.
