Town Family Program

2009-2010

Background and Purpose
The Families Program is now in its twelfth year at Town School.  This program gives everyone the opportunity to know students of all ages.  Our goal is to encourage the acceptance, understanding, and responsibility that can grow from a continuing relationship with boys of different ages, interests, and abilities.  We use the time each month to get to know the boys and to help each boy know the others in the group.  The activities promote learning and working together as a group and provide opportunities for older boys to help younger ones.

Family Groups
There are 44 families, and each family is comprised of one or two faculty or staff members and boys from each of the grades.  Each family group stays together year to year.  Over the course of a boy’s nine years at Town, he will have the chance to grow up with his family group.  As eighth graders graduate, kindergarteners are welcomed into each family.

Activities
We meet in family groups about once a month on a Monday.  Families undertake a variety of activities for fun or for the common good.  Several times during the year family groups will make lunches for a homeless shelter.  We may also help clean the school or our neighborhood.  Other times we may play board games, build creatively, participate in an orienteering experience around the neighborhood, or just take a walk together.
