Technology in the Classroom

Technology, much like a pencil, ruler, or calculator, is one of many tools in the student's backpack for learning. Town School emphasizes this in all aspects of the school's curriculum. An Educational Technologist works closely with every teacher to develop lesson plans that integrate technology seamlessly into the curriculum.

The "Teach the Teacher" Model

Instead of dedicated computer teachers, who are essentially confined to the lab to teach weekly lessons, Town School employs the “Teach the Teacher” philosophy. The Educational Technologist meets with faculty and staff to improve technology skills, and to develop creative, technology-rich lesson plans. Faculty members come to Town School with varying degrees of technical skills and proficiencies. Therefore, we are sensitive to the needs and personal goals of the teachers we support, and attempt to work within the framework of these parameters. This unique approach has incredible benefits for the teachers, educational technologist and the students. It allows the faculty to improve technology proficiencies in the context of their own subject area and expertise. The lesson plans that are developed are taught by the faculty member, creating a sense of ownership and confidence. In many instances, the Educational Technologist will attend these classes for technology support, allowing him the opportunity to observe skilled professionals and interact more intimately with the students.

Teachers, much like today's students, must be technology literate in this digital world. As the old saying goes, "Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."
