is a pleasure to welcome you to the Town School for Boys website,
a site which is both an active tool for our students and parents and
also an introduction to the culture, curriculum, and identity of the
school for newcomers.
Since 1939, San Francisco’s Town School for Boys has had a rich history as a school specializing in teaching boys. The School is also known for the Town School New Teacher Institute and its commitment to training teachers new to their craft. The school’s goals include teaching boys to be good citizens, to enjoy their childhood, to develop a positive sense of self, to give back to their greater community, and to develop academic and intellectual skills which will serve them well through their lifetimes. The school prizes its growing diversity of background, religion, and race, as well as the diversity of interests which is so noteworthy in its student and alumni bodies. Among our graduates are the late Senator John Heinz; Peter Pfau, who designed the memorial to fallen astronauts at Cape Kennedy; Ethan Canin, author of numerous novels and the short story The Palace Thief, which inspired the movie The Emperor’s Club; and thousands of others who have enriched the community of the Bay Area and our nation at large. As the past president of the International Boys’ Schools Coalition, I am proud of this school’s commitment to studying and implementing best practices for teaching boys. The school’s active role in the Coalition has been to support the work of scholars, researchers, and educators, as we develop strategies to enable young men to become compassionate, kind, and well-educated adults. I encourage you to take the time to visit the
rest of our website and to learn more about our school community.
