The Lower School at Town, grades kindergarten through fourth, nurtures students' natural intellectual curiosity and excitement about learning. Our students become proficient readers, writers, and oral communicators through the language arts curriculum; they meet in daily reading groups that use phonics-based materials and award-winning children's literature. Fourth graders begin the transition to upper school by meeting as a class for language arts. Spelling is integrated throughout the curriculum through a spiraling program that teaches spelling skills and strategies, rather than word lists.

Mathematics is also a spiraling program which gives students a better understanding of skills and the confidence that comes from using mathematical thinking to solve real-life problems.

The Lower School social studies curriculum emphasizes cultural diversity and multiple perspectives, and hands-on investigative STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) activities develop inquiry, promote an understanding of the nature of learning, and allow students to autonomously engage in the scientific process. Students take music, art, glee club and physical education in all grades, and can add electives such as drama, woodshop, recorder, Lego engineering, and digital photography in third and fourth grades. Technology is integrated at all grade levels. Weekly Social Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons taught by the Lower School Counselor are interactive and involve discussions, role-playing and experiential activities. These lessons reinforce the classroom teachers' use of Responsive Classroom in creating a kind and inclusive school community.
