Our Culture
Teachers coach many of our athletic teams, support student government, chaperone outdoor education trips, facilitate service projects, run student-interest clubs, and serve on a variety of committees to advance key school initiatives. Upper School teachers also serve as advisors to small cohorts of boys.
Town provides numerous formal channels through which the faculty support each other, including the Learning and Leadership Team, the Employee Wellness Committee, and a mentoring program for new faculty. Faculty and staff actively support, guide, and learn from each other in countless informal ways each day.
Our New Teacher Institute, a program at the heart of the school’s mission in which fourteen Resident Teachers join the faculty for two years and co-teach alongside Head Teachers across the school, fosters Town’s distinctive professional culture of curiosity, collaboration, and generosity of spirit. Among the current faculty and staff, more than a dozen teachers and administrators are alumni of the New Teacher Institute.
Our faculty gather on Wednesday afternoons to discuss topics ranging from curricular design, learning profiles, and executive functioning.
Topics at recent onsite professional development workshops have included character development, AI in the Classroom, reading and writing curriculum, and building belonging.
We annually send cohorts to leading education association conferences and support many members of the faculty who choose to spend part of their summers completing research projects, taking educational trips, and participating in outside programs.
Faculty and staff also have the unique opportunity to teach and learn from each other through our use of our own version of personal learning communities—dedicated time for faculty cohorts to discuss and share practices and reflections driven by individual interest.
In addition, our professional development budget is robust in supporting training around school identified initiatives. And lastly, we have a strong new faculty/staff mentor program that begins with a multi-day stand-alone orientation and continues with regular points of connection to help those new to Town understand both practices and culture we hold dear.
The Parents’ Association hosts an annual holiday luncheon, coordinates monthly faculty and staff treats, provides occasional morning coffee carts, and honors teachers daily during Teacher Appreciation Week each spring.
Each member of the faculty and staff traditionally receives a generous monetary gift raised by the Parents’ Association in December.
At the conclusion of each school year, the Head of School awards several faculty members who embody the values we seek to instill in our boys and who go above and beyond in their teaching. Professional and personal milestones are recognized with gifts from the administration at a faculty and staff celebration at the end of the year.
Teachers receive classroom budgets, all supplies, and support from the administration and parents for field trips.
We encourage qualified candidates with a wide range of experiences and backgrounds to apply. Salary and benefits are commensurate with or exceed those of our peer schools in the San Francisco Bay Area and with like NAIS schools.
