In the Upper School we emphasize a challenging program of academic learning balanced with opportunities for personal development. Our academics balance teacher-centered instruction with student-centered learning experiences that effectively foster critical thinking, problem solving, innovation, and collaboration--all skills our graduates will need as they head to high school and beyond. Our advisory program helps boys develop social and emotional skills while providing them opportunities to reflect and connect with peers.

The Upper School curriculum includes advanced study in literature and composition; ancient, medieval, and modern history; life, earth, ecological, chemical and physical sciences integrated in the exploration of broad questions; and daily physical education. We help students develop inquiry, research and study skills. All students begin foreign language study in the fifth grade with the study of Spanish; Latin is introduced in the seventh grade. All students take a full year course of computer programming in the sixth grade. Each Upper School student uses an iPad or Chromebook to take advantage of research, writing tools and communication technologies which are directly applicable to each class.

Upper School students participate in an extensive outdoor education program, spending time in Pinnacles National Park, Yosemite, the Santa Cruz mountains, and the Marin Headlands. Boys can pursue other areas of interest through offerings in art, drama, music, student government, Mathletes, chess, woodshop, robotics, software engineering, digital design, mentoring, public speaking, and school athletic teams.
